Palissage - Canopy management

june 20 / 20 juin

before -avant (1)

after -après (2)

Field trip!  Vineyard post.  There are some very exciting moments in vineyard life.  I'm not sure that this would qualify as one of them.  I have been doing what I am going to call "canopy management" for lack of a better term.  It's taming wild vines - making order of chaos.

(photo 1) - The vine - this is a syrah - is on its trellis but it is doing pretty much what it wants - shoots everywhere .. it's a mess.  Syran is known for needing help holding up its canes, hence the trellis, but it needs me too.  I come along and pull the shoots back in the retaining wires and hop! (as they say here) it becomes photo 2.

(photo 2) - This tidy little vine has had all of its long shoots put neatly back inside the trellis wires.   It also means that in a few weeks if I left this poor syrah looking like photo 1 the tractor would break those shoots off driving down the row.   In photo 2 we keep all the leaves to ripen the grapes with no tractor breakage.

Such a deal, I know.  When I was doing it it made me think of trying to get Lili's hair into a pony tail (Lili age 5).  In the vineyard the shoots sometimes break, which is not fun, but at least the vine never gets mad and says, "Mom, you're hurting me!"

Here's another one:
En voila une autre:

before - avant

after - après

Chaos! it has tied a knot in itself - it needs me!

Just reaching out for another shoot... until I come along.

When I read design magazines - which is rarely - I have noticed that, at least in France, they place their "design" objects in houses that have vaulted ceilings, beautiful beams or hundred year old walls.   The object in that setting all of a sudden looks SO COOL.  The thing is when you ask yourself,  "What would that look like in MY house?" Your answer is often, "not as cool."  My ceilings are rarely vaulted... I have left behind my beams and hundred year old walls for an ordinary little house with a garden.

So here's my story:

the beautiful old house... I was there last weekend and  everything I set down suddenly looked SO COOL.

I went to visit a wonderful artist friend of mine in her jewel of a house in a teeny village in the mountains.  I set my offering -we were having lunch together- on her mother's counter and it suddenly looked like House Beautiful.  I thought ... (lightbulb moment) this is how advertising works.  Suddenly my bottle looked really cool. So here it is.  Ventilo in a beautiful kitchen.  And then I couldn't help adding my eye candy photos of her house.

My sink at home looks like that.. and there are the beams...

Nina found a box of marbles under the windowsill
there's a swing in the living room - and the orange chairs...

Bracelets - I'm sure they're hand dyed and felted - on the chandelier

Felted rocks - very heavy and fuzzy - so strange to hold
felted knots

RUGBY!

Rugby is the national sport of Douzens (my village of 750) and Saturday night there was a final.  Toulon played Toulouse.  We were for Toulon.  Didier had briefed us at lunch so we knew who to root for.
This group of young rugby players were for Toulouse - as can be seen in their obvious joy - Toulouse won.  There's kissing and everything.  I love France.

One thing that I thought was funny was the beer drinking.  I attended this function with Didier, Adrian and Jean-Pierre, all wine makers.  We were accompanied by a couple of doctors, the mayor of the village, and an oenologist.  All drinking beer.  Rugby games and beer.  When the game was over we did have some wine because it is our job.

But there are still lots of dubious cups with foamy lines in them. I have nothing against beer but in a village that makes wine...

And last but not least Nina, who had no idea who we were rooting for but she dug the flag!

Labeling - Etiquetage

June 11 / 11 juin

Last week Didier, my father-in-law André and I spent the day putting labels on bottles and bottles in boxes.  I made a super interesting photo movie of it - mostly to see if I could. Now that I know how, I have to find some more worthy subject matter.  It does give an idea- if sped up - of what we were doing.  We went through this process - filling a pallet with boxes - 4 times.  Each time it took a lot longer than 3 seconds.

a few words from our sponsors - et l'été.. suite!

June 8 / 8 juin

This postcard  - we are electing the legislative assembly in France this month - went out to announce that there were 171 cases left..

and this one - the political message is unclear - announced that we're down to 149 -  It's a success!

Evening market in Montlaur - Marché à Montlaur

June 8 /  8 juin

Our friends Alex and Luc invited us to a market/barbecue in Montlaur on Tuesday.  We brought wine, as usual. They have a big organic garden produce veggies...radishes, strawberries...etc.  The sausage and potato chip were not produced in their garden but they do give a certain ballance to the photo.

Barcodes! - Des Codes Barres

June 5/ 5 juin

I recently got a "we need barcodes on the bottles" e mail from Doug, our US importer and distributer.  I have to admit I had mixed feelings about the whole barcode thing.
On one hand, I thought "wow, we are for real now!" People will be carrying the bottle above to a check-out counter somewhere and it will be BEEPED through.  What a step.
It's an even bigger step when I think about my first trip home with 24 of our bottles in my luggage.  Their labels had been printed on our printer at home and glued on the bottles with milk (an excellent glue by the way).

On the other hand, we -- the milk labelers - have BARCODES! We do EVERYTHING the long labor-intensive way.   It's a shock to be so efficient, so modern.  At least the shock was tempered by the fact that the first batch had to be barcoded by hand one by one because we had already printed barcode-less labels....not so efficient, not so modern!

June 2 / 2 juin
Saturday we were invited to a picnic organized by a friend who raises cattle...you know, a cowgirl. We met up with her in a tiny village in the back of beyond and then followed for at least a half an hour up a dirt road to the plateau where she has her cows.  I'm thinking picnic. Blankets on the ground. Sandwiches. I was a little off.
We ate lots of raw beef with capers.  THE beef... from THE cows (see photo with the future cowgirl).  It was memorable.

We had to taste a lot wonderful (mostly) local wine... Domaine de Beaujeu , our Ventilo 2011, Petites Mains from Domaine de Regazel, a wine from Augergne and a Merlot from Domaine de Roquenégade

which took awhile...
ça nous à pris un moment....

Meanwhile Lili's answer to the question "What do you want to do when you grow up?" was rapidly changing from "painter" (the usual response) to "cowgirl."

And just because it's beautiful, the view from the composting toilets.  I'm thinking that I might want to be a cowgirl too when I grow up.

June 1

It's that time of year again! The Ventilo rosé 2011 email ad campaign for friends of Colline de l'hirondelle is back (politically correct as always). We started with 200 cases...after day one we've only got 171 left! to be continued...

A suivre...

Kids at cocktail hour - les enfants à l'apero

June 1

Friday night wine was opening night for the Caveau du Clos in Lezignan. We had left some samples with the owner and thought we'd check the place out... all four of us.  There were petit fours and sparkling rosé.  Delicious sparkling rosé.  I will have to send out spies to find out what it was.

Nina, because of the many cocktail hours she attends, likes olives.   Here she is pearched on Didier's wine glass making a face that I took to mean "it's sour, but I like it".  One thing about local wine  events - in the under 6 category, Nina is never alone.

There was Margot, who was there with her parents - and her fancy shoes.  Georgeous chubby legs- wine glass....

and then there were the children under the shelves of bottles hiding out.

Children and wine... who knew? Ah the frogs...

Delivery - Livraison

May 31 / 31 mai

Toulouse!

I had to go to Toulouse yesterday to deliver wine.  That is the official story and I'm sticking to it.  The details are admittedly a little more fun.

Didier and I met a very cool couple when we were selling wine at a farmers' market at the Cité de Carcassonne.   They both had bright colored glasses frames - he had a waxed mustache and must be thirty, thirty-five maybe.  So daring!

So the daring couple liked our wine.  We liked the daring couple.  It also happens that the daring couple is opening a restaurant in Toulouse...you see where I am going with this...  So yesterday, I drove 160 miles (round trip) to deliver 4 bottles of wine - free samples, to Mr. waxed mustache, we can call him Philippe, because that's his name, and fab orange glasses, Sarah.  Their restaurant is totally under construction.  Its official sign is taped to the window with scotch tape. (see photo)
(voir photo)

I am loving this.
Moi, j'adore.

I went to such great lengths to get our wine to Sarah and Philippe because I had a cunning plan. I had not come to Toulouse alone...

It had been 12 years since I had spent a day in Toulouse.  I called Alice and Kat weeks ahead of time. We figured out how to get all of our blonde girl-children fed at lunchtime without their moms and we were off.

We went to a café to have lunch under beautiful shady trees. We drank Perrier and cold rosé and ate quiche and meat pies.  I will spare you any incriminating photos of the many pairs of gorgeous shoes that were tried on.

So all in all it was very hard work (while Didier was in Douzens, spreading 20 tons of compost on the vineyards with a rake)!....

Place Occitane future location of "la Marée Gourmande"
